Klaine Fanfic Recommendation: Fix by Rainjoy
Apparently there’s been this Bad Boy phase all over Tumblr. And, to be honest, when I saw the picture of Darren and a few of the Warblers at the Dalton: Reform School for Boys and thought -if done well- it’d be an interesting idea.
I’ve tried reading many of such fics, but I’ll admit that I get disheartened when strange, pathetic copies of Noah Puckerman are labeled as “Blaine” and/or “Kurt”, but they are nothing like the characters I adore. Yes. I understand that they’re supposed to be “bad boys”. But badboy!Blaine seems to just be a walking stereotype while badboy!Kurt is worse than the time Kurt wore trucker hats and sang Motown.
The only badboy!Blaine fic I feel is really worth reading is Fix by Rainjoy. It’s arguably the best because -while there are major differences with the characters- they’re still them. The way she writes badboy!Blaine isn’t as some unknown stranger, but a person Blaine could have become had he reacted another way to the bullying at his old school. In this story, he’s a bit more bitter and a lot angrier, but -like his canon counterpart- is painfully honest and strangely innocent. Like a puppy that was abandoned and left out in the rain.
Even Kurt’s characterization is fantastic, because he’s not a damsel in distress or a pushover. He has to face a heavy situation with his bully and it’s made him miserable, but he’s still determined to solve it himself. It’s only reluctantly that he allows Blaine to help him and only because the latter was the one who took the initiative. The one who reached out for him. But then he’s the one reaching out and carefully -but tenaciously- chips away at the almost impenetrable defenses Blaine has tightly wound around himself.
I love this fic because it’s just a beautiful love story of two boys, damaged and lost, but not broken. Who find one another and offer the support each of them needs after the rest of the world gave up on them.
There’s also two sequels: Not Quick, Not Easy and My Better Dressed Demons.
I highly recommend them all.
